Unit-level inference uses bounded Monte Carlo bootstrap p-values, with marginal confidence interval overlap retained as an option. Global similarity is summarised by the robust S index, accompanied by a test of whether two patterns are more different than two realisations of a single process, and a test of the spatial arrangement of the differences. A longitudinal extension compares each period of a time series against a base period and classifies unit-level trajectories. Publication-ready maps can be redrawn with user-chosen layouts. authors: - family-names: Andresen given-names: Martin A. email: andresen@sfu.ca orcid: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4767-7276 preferred-citation: type: article title: 'Testing for similarity in area-based spatial patterns: A nonparametric Monte Carlo approach' authors: - family-names: Andresen given-names: Martin A. email: andresen@sfu.ca orcid: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4767-7276 journal: Applied Geography year: '2009' volume: '29' issue: '3' doi: 10.1016/j.apgeog.2008.12.004 start: '333' end: '345' repository: https://cran.r-universe.dev commit: b2bd5acdff0ecb592a1f354619834b845444e669 date-released: '2026-10-27' contact: - family-names: Andresen given-names: Martin A. email: andresen@sfu.ca orcid: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4767-7276 references: - type: article title: 'Testing longitudinal change in spatial distributions and patterns: An extension of the spatial point pattern test' authors: - family-names: Andresen given-names: Martin A. journal: Annals of the American Association of Geographers year: '2026' notes: In press
