Estimation of the\nnumber of communities is a fundamental and critical issue in\nnetwork analysis. Most existing studies assume that the number\nof communities is known a priori, or lack of rigorous\ntheoretical guarantee on the estimation consistency. This\nmethod proposes a regularized network embedding model to\nsimultaneously estimate the community structure and the number\nof communities in a unified formulation. The proposed model\nequips network embedding with a novel composite regularization\nterm, which pushes the embedding vector towards its center and\ncollapses similar community centers with each other. A rigorous\ntheoretical analysis is conducted, establishing asymptotic\nconsistency in terms of community detection and estimation of\nthe number of communities.
